Over the last three years members of the St. Lawrence Knitting and Crochet Group’s were busy knitting and crocheting hats, gloves, scarves, booties, sweaters and Beanie Baby outfits. Most of the items were donated to the St. Mary’s Women and Children Shelter in Dorchester. In the winter of 2008, they decided to expand their efforts into a parish wide-community project. The Group wanted a project that the young, old, men, women, children, and shut-ins of the St. Mary of the Assumption Parish could participate in. They wanted a project that wouldn’t require a lot of time or money, but which would go along way to let people know that ‘we care.’
The Community Afghan project was born in January 2008. The Group hoped to complete one or two afghans that Father Jack could distribute as he saw fit, and maybe a baby blanket for a Catholic Daughters’ fundraiser. About 30 people have contributed in one way or another to our project. The only ‘rule’ was to use washable worsted weight yarn of any color and try to make the square a specific size.
The group was very productive. They knitted, crocheted, donated yarn, assembled afghans, sewed on labels, or served as ‘cheer leaders’ as grandma’s square count kept growing and growing. Some people contributed one square, some hundreds of squares. If some weren’t perfect, we were reminded that no one but God is perfect. Each contribution and contributor was equally valued. As of November 2008, about 40 afghans were completed by the group!
Members of the 2008 Community Afghan group didn’t just stitch together afghans. They stitched together new friendships, reinforced old one, had lots of fun along the way and more importantly, the fruits of their labor let people know that someone cared about them!
